Sensory Garden Project Introduction
The Friends Of Kings Park have partnered with pupils at King's Park Secondary School to plan and construct a sensory garden within King's Park.
The Friends of Kings Park with disabled groups identified a need for a sensory garden in the park. In order to bring this project to fruition, they realised that they must develop wider partnerships with other groups in the local community.
A link was established with Kings Park Secondary School. Some pupils and teachers have been engaged in two years of research work such as the installing and planning of a sensory garden.
The Land and Environmental Services team offered their professional expertise as did the Landscape Department.
The Gardening Club from the park and Urban Roots from Toryglen were willing to lend their support. The local community council and the Glasgow South East Regeneration Agency were also involved.
Funding was sought from various sources and once this was achieved work began on phase 1.

Kings Park Secondary School and Sensory Garden project
Students at the local Kings Park Secondary School will be recommencing work on Phase 2 of the sensory garden this summer.
As a token of our appreciation of their hard work, we have given the students custom made FOKP t shirts for each student who has taken part in the project. Below are some of the students wearing the t shirts.
Sensory Garden Project Open Day 16th June 2010
On the 16th of June 2010, an open day was held by the sensory garden to allow local schools to see the progress that had taken place over the last month. Kings Park Secondary School provided the ground plans and plant types for phase 1 of this project.
Games and other attractions were held on the periphery of the garden. Provided below is a gallery of some of the images taken on the open day itself.
The school wanted the garden to have an informal and fun day type opening in order that the pupils involved in the project would see the fruition of their efforts before leaving school, although phase 1 was not complete.
The day was a great success and children from the local feeder primary schools, special needs and nurseries were entertained with face painting, sports games, arts and crafts and Brazilian music and dance.
Helen McArdle from the Evening Times interviewed members of the Friends group, teachers and pupils. She also did a video of the very happy scene which will appear in the Evening Times community section.
Phase 1 of Sensory Garden Project almost complete 30th August 2010
Since the open day, further work has been carried out on the Sensory Garden.
One or two items remain outstanding in order to complete phase 1, namely: rocks to be placed in the central area; 2 raised beds still to be completed and installed; and paths to be laid.
Hopefully, this will be done over the next few weeks.
Please find below a video interview done by Evening Times reporter Helen McArdle about the sensory garden with members of friends of kings park and Kings Park secondary school. The interview itself is towards the end of the clip starting at 5:15 minutes from the start of the clip.
